October on Skyline Drive

In the midst of my whirlwind of a fall, Imants and I were able to take a quick trip to Skyline Drive.  And now, two months later, I have a chance to update my blog.

Seeing the sunrise alone made the trip (the credit goes to Imants for this idea). I recommend that everyone at least consider going for the sunrise.  I had to quickly pull over to the side of the road to take this, before the sun went into the clouds. Had I been a minute later, I would have missed this.

For the Love of Dogs and Cats

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

     ~Anatole France

This time of year makes me think of one of my favorite fall memories: bringing our English Springer Spaniel puppy, Chester, home from his farm in Frederick, MD. It was 1993 and I wasn’t crazy about dogs…at all. But Chester quickly changed that.  It has been nearly six years since he passed on. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be the dog person that I am today.

Below is a collection of some of my favorite dog and cat shots from the past couple years. I love photographing animals, who are just as expressive as people.

This post is dedicated to Chester. Here he is in his final year, sitting on a bed he made of newspapers and ads from the Saturday paper–a weekend tradition for him.

Leo and Addie, two buddies, enjoying a relaxing afternoon in Burtonsville, MD.  Although always very energetic and strides ahead of Leo, Addie appeared to watch over him in his declining years, helping him along when his arthritis slowed him down, and sleeping against him to show that she was there for support. I could tell that she cared about him a great deal.

This picture shows what cats are all about in Croatia: relaxing and enjoying the scenery. While hiking up the steep steps of Dubrovnik, I passed this cat, who looked me up and down and seemed to be thinking, “Oh great, another tourist who I’ll have to give CPR to.”

A sweet pug, Chloe, in New York City. In the picture, Chloe is without her other half, Bruno, who is a few years her senior and so many things to her: her protector, her constant companion, her confidant, her ear-cleaner.

This cat, Number One, née Puddin’, is the friendliest and most eager-to-please cat I’ve ever met. I dare say, so much like a dog. I should say that I know him as “Number One,” but he is now “Rocket,” because he flies up the steps like a rocket launching.  So yes, he’s on his third name. Originally from Moorseville, NC, he now resides in a beautiful log cabin in Culpeper, VA.

People weren’t the only ones mingling and networking at Mutts & Martinis. This is the equivalent of an exchange of business cards.

Azitis, the elderly and sometimes cantankerous Chihuahua, on his beloved golf cart. Azitis was from Elka Park, New York (in the Catskill Mountains), and lived on the grounds of my childhood Latvian camp. He seldom left the golf cart. In a way, he was the unofficial caretaker of the camp. In my opinion, the place isn’t quite the same without him.

azitis

This was Azitis’s nemesis, Roze, who was about half his age. They lived in the same space. Although sworn enemies, when Azitis passed away, Roze stopped eating, and passed away a short time later. Perhaps they really had a deep connection all along, and the malice was all for show. I hope that wherever they are now, they are sitting on a golf cart and laughing at how much they fooled people in their former life.

This is Allie, the beagle mix, who appeared in a blog post this past spring.

This cat, of Buenos Aires, is known as “Mitchy.” He’s a stray that has won the heart of his new owner/host. Given Mitchy’s scars, I’d say that he has seen some tough things in his life, has possibly associated with a bad feline crowd, but in the end, turned out to be very friendly and well-adjusted.  He always found his way into my room, and although seeing a stray cat sitting on my pillow isn’t usually the most welcomed sight in the world, Mitchy was so sweet that I almost didn’t mind.

This slightly out-of-focus picture, taken in Valeria del Mar, Argentina, happens to be another favorite given the story.  I was walking along a side street with my dad and sister, trying to find our way to the ocean, when we turned left and saw these two dogs sitting right there, as if waiting for us. One was a stray and one wasn’t, but that didn’t come between them, and they seemed inseparable. They followed us back to the beach, then split off to play in the ocean. We were walking for another mile or so and looked back to see them still playing in the waves together.

This is the day I met Chance, the picture-perfect Miniature Schnauzer. The faraway look in his eyes might have something to do with his doggy girlfriend from the dog park.

This is Logan, one of the resident Golden Retrievers at Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD. When he was awake, he kept an eye on the property and general store, making sure everything ran smoothly…all the while, doing so in high temperatures and allowing kids with sticky ice cream fingers to pet him.  The last time I saw him, he was passed out under the tomato stand. That dog deserved a break!

Wolfgang (“Wolfi”), of Buenos Aires. A dog that gets to eat–on a regular basis–the best asado I’ve ever had. Great life!

This is Nubet, Wolfi’s friend/life partner, a stunningly beautiful cat (who seemed to favor the chorizo). Que linda!

One of my favorite, and luckiest, shots of the year. I was supposed to be lining up to walk in the Norfolk NATO Festival parade when I spotted this mug.  I had my point-and-shoot camera and two seconds to take a decent picture before this hyper dog turned away. Success!

I ♥ New York

New York City is my birth city and will always be one of my favorite places in the world. Here are a few pictures of the skyline I took during my trip last weekend. The views are from Old Glory Park in Weekawken, NJ, which is directly across from Midtown.

A Croatian Adventure

My good friend Heather and I flew off to Croatia in mid July and spent a glorious two weeks enjoying the country, starting in the north and working our way south. I filled a 16GB card with pictures, so it took a while to sort through everything. I wisely got my DSLR professionally cleaned before the trip. It hadn’t been cleaned since I got it a few years ago, and it made a world of difference. It’s not cheap, but I highly recommend it.  The pictures below are some highlights. Well, many, many highlights.

Our first stop, Zagreb!  After landing and taking a bus, then tram to our hotel, we hauled ourselves out for a walk. I was mostly asleep when I took these pictures. What a neat city, though!  Here, we were also introduced to the “pizza cut.” Stay tuned, because a visual will present itself later.

1

We saw these sheep in ads all over Croatia. Not sure what it’s about, but why not take a picture?

The Zagreb Cathedral

Unfortunately, this museum was closing right when we walked by and peered in. I bet this is quite a museum.

2

One of the coolest things we came across was this party, held high above the bustling streets of Zagreb. Great live music played, beer flowed, and young people sat around chatting and smoking their hearts out. I loved the vibe, and loved the chandeliers hanging from the trees.

3

Jelačić Square

5

Luckily, we caught the right bus to Rab Island, and were elated to catch our first glimpse of the Adriatic Sea in Senj.  The water was spectacular.

Zooming along on the bus.

7

Another bus shot, and I’m surprised it turned out this well.  One great thing about renting a car when you go to Croatia is that you can stop off anywhere, like many of these people did (and I’d bet anything that these tourists are German), go snorkeling for a bit, then continue on your way. Definitely not easy to do when you have to rely on a bus.

8

Continuing south to Rab Island.

Last March when I was at Iguazu Falls in Argentina, I was struck by the pattern on this butterfly’s wings.

Have a great 8/8, everyone!

My stars of June: James and Ryan

It’s time for an update!

In late June I had the pleasure of meeting two adorable little guys, James and Ryan. I really enjoyed capturing their range of expressions, and I look forward to meeting them again in the fall when the chance of us dealing with a hot and humid morning is much slimmer!

The place: Butler’s Orchard in Germantown. The strawberries were a bit shriveled at this point, but we found plenty of other great spots to hang out.

Pensive Ryan…

Love the grin on James!

Believe it or not, there was a random disco ball up in the trees. Also, a motorcycle zooming by behind me. Score for distractions!

James could give the Crew Cuts models a run for their money. Love this casual pose against an antique hay rake (I’m a dork and looked that contraption up when I got home. What??).

Father’s Day

I love this picture of my dad. When it was taken, he was having a great time with his little friends in a displaced persons camp in Austria, unaware of the horrible state of his dear home country of Latvia. He and his family suffered many losses along the way, but they ultimately made it to the U.S. and built a great life for themselves. And now he has two daughters to whom he has passed his proud Latvian heritage.

Mēs Tevi mīlam, Tēti!  Happy Father’s Day!

Memorial Day weekend kid photoshoot

My Memorial Day weekend took off with a kid photoshoot!  I was excited to meet David, Stella, and their dog, Allie. The goal: at least a couple great pictures of the kids and the dog. The challenge: Allie’s energy level!  She enjoys tearing around the yard and digging holes, but having dog treats on hand helped a lot. I was amazed at how patient David and Stella were, despite gnats, high humidity, and the several hours of shooting. What great, cute kids!  There were so many shots to pick from in the end. Here are some highlights.

An afternoon at Homestead Farm

Last weekend I had a hankering for some fresh strawberries, so what better place to go than Homestead Farm in Poolesville, Maryland!  I figured since I was going, I might as well take my camera with me, since there are always plenty photo opportunities there. Before loading up on strawberries, though, I couldn’t resist the sheep, and their appetite for grass clippings!

After giving the sheep more than a week’s worth of grass, I made my way over to the calf, who was as cute as can be.

What can I say?  I love animals.  Here are a couple more.

Finally, to the strawberries!  I got what I came for.

Visions of strawberry smoothies dance in my head...

I love macro shots, in case you didn't know

The perfect strawberry

I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to Logan, the friendly farm dog (one of three). Until next time!

Can I take you home with me?
